How to post on Pinterest from a computer or phone: create a Pin, fill in each field, save a draft or publish later, and fix a Pin that won't publish.

Explore more in

Quick answer: To post on Pinterest from a computer, log in, click Create and upload your image or video. (On a business account, open the menu icon and select Create Pin under Create.) Add a title and description, include a destination link if relevant, and choose a board if you want to save the Pin to one. Then click Publish. In the app, tap the add icon at the bottom of the screen, tap Pin, select your image or video, tap Continue, fill in the details and tap Create. On Pinterest, a post is called a Pin.

Pinterest's Help Center is the primary source for the posting steps and limits in this guide; we also link to its Business Community for browser troubleshooting. Pinterest updates its menus often, and the options you see can vary by account, so your screen may differ slightly. The instructions below follow Pinterest's published Help Center guidance rather than a separately tested walkthrough of every account interface.

How to Post on Pinterest From a Computer

These are the steps on Pinterest's Create a Pin page.

Post an image

  1. Log in to your Pinterest account.
  2. Click Create at the top left of the screen. On a business account, select the menu icon, then select Create Pin under Create.
  3. Click the upload arrow to select an image from your computer, or drag and drop it into the upload window.
  4. Add the title, description, link and board. The next section explains each field.
  5. To add text or change the aspect ratio, click the pencil icon at the top right of the image, make your changes and click Done.
  6. Click Publish.

You can select up to 10 images, and Pinterest says each image will create a new Pin.

Post a video

The steps are the same, with one extra field. Select Edit cover to choose the thumbnail for your video. You can select up to 10 videos, and each one creates a new Pin. To combine images and videos in a single video Pin, Pinterest says to use the app.

Pinterest's Pin specs list which files it accepts. Our Pin dimensions guide covers sizes and aspect ratios.

How to Post on Pinterest From Your Phone

These instructions follow Pinterest's published Android and iOS steps. Some editing screens and button labels differ between image Pins, video Pins and devices.

Post an image from the app

  1. Open the Pinterest app and log in.
  2. Tap the add icon at the bottom of the screen, then tap Pin.
  3. Select an image from your device, or use the camera icon to take a new photo.
  4. Tap Continue or Next, as shown in your app.
  5. Add the available Pin details, including the title, description, destination link and board if applicable.
  6. If you want to edit the image, use the pencil icon and the available text or design tools, then continue.
  7. Tap Create to publish.

Post a video from the app

  1. Tap the add icon, choose Pin and select a video.
  2. Continue to Pinterest's video-editing screen.
  3. Use the available editing tools and choose a cover image if needed.
  4. Add the Pin details and select the relevant publishing options.
  5. Tap Create.

When selecting multiple images or videos, Pinterest may offer a choice between creating individual Pins and combining the files into a stitched video Pin.

Pinterest also supports product tagging in eligible Pin-creation workflows. See its Create a Pin guide for the options available to your account.

How to Create a Pinterest Pin for Your Business

The steps are the same on a business account. What changes is where you start. Pick the page you want people to reach first, then build the Pin around it, so that the image, the words and the link all make the same promise.

Here's a made-up example of a small shop selling a ceramic mug:

DecisionExample
Destination pageThe product page for the mug, not the shop's homepage
Who it's forPeople looking for a gift for a coffee lover
ImageThe mug in use on a kitchen table, in a vertical format
TitleSpeckled Ceramic Mug: A Gift for Coffee Lovers
DescriptionOne or two plain sentences saying what the mug is, its size and who it suits
BoardA board about coffee gifts, not a general "Shop" board

The same order works for a service business, where the destination might be a service page, and for a business blog, where it would be the article the Pin describes.

A business account is free, and it adds tools a personal account doesn't have. Pinterest's guide to creating Pins lists Pin analytics, scheduling, ads and rich Pins. Our guide to business vs personal accounts explains how to switch.

What to Put in Each Pinterest Pin Field

Here's what each field does. For exact limits, see our Pinterest character limits guide.

Title

Say what the Pin is about in the words a person would use. Pinterest's organic Pin specs allow up to 100 characters. Put the important information first so the title still makes sense when displayed in a limited space.

Description

Describe what someone will find on the page. Pinterest's Pin specs allow up to 800 characters and say descriptions don't appear in the home feed or search feed, but that Pinterest uses them "to determine relevance for delivery." That doesn't guarantee reach. Our guide on adding keywords to Pinterest shows where keywords belong. Our Pinterest Caption Generator can draft a title and description for you to review and edit.

Link

Pinterest calls this optional, but on a business Pin it's usually the point. Paste the exact page you chose, not your homepage, and open it yourself to check it works. Pinterest says it sometimes blocks links that redirect to other pages, contain misleading, inappropriate or spammy content, or otherwise break its rules.

Board

Choose a board from the drop-down menu, or click Create board to make one. Pinterest's creation steps present this as optional: "If you'd like to add your Pin to a board." Its creator guidance still recommends saving to a related board, because the board gives people more context.

Alt text

Alt text describes the Pin for people using screen readers, and Pinterest says it will only be read to them. On a computer, select the drop-down next to More options and write up to 500 characters under Alt text, following Pinterest's alt text steps. Describe what's in the image and don't use the field for keywords.

Related topics

You can tag up to 10 related topics, which Pinterest says helps people searching for similar ideas find your Pin. Pick the ones that fit the Pin, because tagging more doesn't promise more reach.

AI-modified label

Pinterest's steps include toggles to mark content made completely or partly with AI, or that includes an AI-generated person. Use them when they apply. Pinterest lists the toggles for desktop Pins and app video Pins.

How to Save a Pin Draft or Publish Later

Pinterest gives you two ways to hold a Pin back.

Drafts

Pinterest's rules for Pin drafts:

  • Drafts expire 30 days after you first store them, and you can't retrieve them after that.
  • You can't edit a draft across devices. A draft started in the app has to be finished there.
  • You can save up to 50 drafts on a computer and publish them all at once.
  • You need at least 100 MB of free space on your mobile device to create a new draft.

On a computer, you'll find them under Pin drafts on the Create Pin screen. In the app, tap the add icon, tap Pin, then tap the folder icon at the bottom right.

Publish later

If you have a business account, you'll see Publish at a later date when you create a Pin. Pinterest's Schedule Pins page says you can schedule up to 30 days ahead and have up to 10 Pins scheduled at once. Our guide on how to schedule Pins covers the full process and bulk options.

Can You Edit a Pinterest Pin After Publishing?

Partly. Pinterest's Edit or delete a Pin page says you may be able to edit a Pin's title, description, link, board and comment settings, and that the options depend on how the Pin was created.

You can't edit a Pin's image, video or audio once it's published. To fix those, create a new Pin.

To edit a Pin on a computer, click your profile picture, open the Pin, click the ellipsis icon and select Edit Pin. Make your changes and click Save. You can delete the Pin from the same screen, but Pinterest warns that deleted Pins can't be recovered.

Why Your Pinterest Pin Won't Publish

Pinterest doesn't publish one checklist for this, and a failed Pin doesn't always tell you the cause. Work through these in order.

1. Check the file. The Pin specs list BMP, JPEG, PNG, TIFF and WEBP for images, with a 20 MB maximum on the web. Videos must run from 4 seconds to 5 minutes. On the web they must be MP4 or M4V, and the apps also accept MOV.

2. Check the text. Make sure the title is within 100 characters and the description within 800.

3. Check the destination link. Open the URL yourself and check that it reaches the intended page without an unexpected redirect. Pinterest may block certain links. If other checks have failed, you can try creating the Pin without a destination link to help isolate the issue. This is a troubleshooting test, not a diagnostic guarantee. See Pinterest's Fix a broken link guidance.

4. Restart the app. Pinterest's own advice for trouble creating a Pin is to restart the app and make sure you're on the latest version.

5. Try your browser. When creators reported save errors on the web, a Pinterest team member suggested clearing the cache and cookies, updating the browser, trying another browser or computer, and turning off extensions and ad blockers one at a time.

6. Consider the account. Pinterest's guide to creating Pins says you may lose the ability to create Pins if a Pin breaks its guidelines, and that spam-related behavior can get an account temporarily blocked. If nothing else works, use Contact us on Pinterest's Help Center. It can look into your account, and we can't.

What to Do After Publishing a Business Pin

Open the Pin once it's live and check three things:

  • The link. Click it and make sure it reaches the page you chose.
  • The text. Read the title for typos and check the Pin is on the intended board. Pinterest may allow you to edit these details, depending on how the Pin was created.
  • The image. If it's wrong, you'll need a new Pin.

Then give the Pin time before you judge it. Pinterest says a business account lets you see how often people view your Pin and visit your links. Our Pinterest analytics hub explains what those numbers mean. If you later want to show a Pin to more people, our guide explains how to advertise a Pin on Pinterest.

Creating a business Pin is the first step. Once it's live, understanding its organic performance matters too. PinEasy can read organic Pin metrics from a connected Pinterest business account. Create a free account to explore the available tools.

Frequently Asked Questions About Posting on Pinterest

Can you post on Pinterest without a business account?

Yes. Pinterest's steps for creating a Pin work on a personal account too. You need a business account for features such as scheduling and Pin analytics.

Can you post on Pinterest without adding a Pin to a board?

Pinterest's creation steps present the board as optional: "If you'd like to add your Pin to a board." Bulk upload is different, because Pinterest requires a board for every row of the file. For a business Pin, Pinterest's creator guidance still recommends saving to a related board.

How do you post a Pin with a link to your website?

Paste the page's address into the Link field while you create the Pin. If the Pin is already published, open Edit Pin to add or change the link, if Pinterest offers that option for your Pin.

Can you post multiple Pins at once?

Yes. On a computer you can select up to 10 images or videos, and each becomes its own Pin. You can also publish up to 50 saved drafts at once. Pinterest's bulk upload tool takes up to 200 images or videos from a .csv file, on a business account and on desktop only.

Can you save a Pinterest Pin without publishing it?

Yes, as a draft. Pinterest says drafts expire 30 days after you first store them.

Can you change a Pin's image after publishing?

No. Pinterest says you can't edit a Pin's image, video or audio once it's published. You need to create a new Pin.

Why can't I post a Pin on Pinterest?

Check the file against Pinterest's specs and confirm the title and description are within their limits. Check the destination URL, restart or update the app if applicable, and try the browser troubleshooting steps above. If the problem continues, contact Pinterest through its Help Center.
